THE Solomon Island Rugby Union (SIRUF) Federation is expected to host a Soltuna 7s for Solomons descendants in Fiji on March 17 in Suva.
This is confirmed by the federation’s national development manager and former Flying Fijian, Alivereti Mocelutu.
“SIRUF will host the Soltuna 7s tournament in Fiji in March. This is first time for the federation to host such a 7s tournament out of the Solomon Islands,” Mocelutu said.
“The initiative for the tournament is to strengthen the bond and relationship, enlighten roots and most importantly, scope potential players to represent the Solomons in future tournaments, especially the Oceania 7s, Pacific Mini Games, Pacific Games and World Rugby Sevens Series. This is our pathways to short and long term plans.”
He said the SIRUF would accommodate 12 teams where two teams would be from the Solomon Islands and 10 teams made up of Solomon Islands descendence in Fiji.
“The two teams from Solomon Islands include the national team and Islanders Rugby Club.
“We recommend sending our national team for exposure after we played well in the Oceania 7s and mini games in Vanuatu last year.
Playing quality and physical games, and structured teams give us an opportunity to be competitive at high level competitions.”
He said the Solomon Islands national side would also compete in this year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s in Suva.
