May 2: Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association Marks World Tuna Day

The Chairman and Board of Directors of the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association (PITIA) would like to wish our members, fishery stakeholders and all Pacific Islanders a happy World Tuna Day.

PITIA represents the domestic tuna industry from across the Pacific region. The foundation of our organization is a shared understanding that tuna are the most valuable common resource of Pacific Island nations – and are a vital cultural as well as economic resource. Tuna embody our values of sustainability, continuity and freedom. The ocean connects every Pacific Island nation, and tuna are a living embodiment of the ocean’s dynamic life force.

On World Tuna Day we acknowledge the privilege we have to represent our members and to advance the sustainability of our domestic tuna fleets. We reaffirm our commitment to the species that have sustained us for thousands of years and to every future generation of Pacific Islanders.

World Tuna Day was designated in a 2016 resolution of the UN General Assembly in order to highlight the importance of sustainably managed fish stocks in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
